The Barfathers Story

Ryan Lombardo and Mike Bazzi met in high school in North Carolina. Neither quite fit the room he was standing in, so the friendship ran quiet: two introverts who mostly kept in touch online, certain they would build something together and unhurried about what.

The first idea was supplements. It died fast. The margins were thin, the shortcuts were everywhere, and neither of them wanted to compete on shortcuts. So the ambition went on the shelf and they went to work. Mike joined Microsoft. Ryan moved to California to work in startups.

2020 changed the plan

When the pandemic hit, Mike pivoted his own young company to sourcing medical-grade masks, N95s and KN95s, for the medical teams who could not find them. Ryan was inside a well-known men's brand, helping lead what was then the largest facility of its kind for in-house manufacturing of cold-process soap. Everyone was washing their hands more than ever, and a lot of men were noticing for the first time what a synthetic bar does to skin.

At the end of 2021, Ryan moved back to North Carolina. During the move, Mike floated it half as a joke: why don't we start a men's brand? Ryan matched the half-joke with half-seriousness. The serious half won.

The name is the contract

Lumbazzi is the two surnames, Lombardo and Bazzi, welded into one. That was deliberate. Put your family's name on the label and every corner you cut carries your family's signature.

We can't disrespect our families with junk and fluff products and certainly will not disrespect you with the same.

From the start there was one sentence to build by: we will be the goal post. In men's grooming, plenty of companies arrive to make a quick buck while men are still learning what good looks like. We chose the slower way: real oils, small batches, formulas tested until they earn the label. It takes longer than most are willing to sit through. That is the point.

The test has not changed since the folding-table days at the markets: would we sell it to a man standing three feet away? Hundreds of men bought a bar off that table, came back, and brought a friend. Everything we make still has to pass it.

What Lumbazzi is for

We make natural personal care for men: cold-process soap poured slow and cured up to six weeks, oils pressed from plants you can name, a lip balm that took forty versions to get right. The scents come from espresso, cedar and meadow, not from a lab sheet. There is no palm oil in the bars and no synthetic fragrance anywhere, because a man three feet away can tell the difference even when he cannot name it. Nothing ships until both of us would use it daily ourselves.

The rest is a small ritual, kept daily. A bar, an oil, two minutes in the morning. Your presence speaks before you do; we make the raw materials.

If you want to see where the standard starts, start where we did: the Proper Bar.
