Read the ingredient panel on many widely sold lip balms and you will find alcohol in the list. In a product meant to moisturize, that deserves an explanation, because drying skin is what alcohol does. Everyone who formulates these products knows it. It stays in the formulas anyway.
The reapplication loop
Here is how it plays out on your lips. The balm goes on and feels cooling for a moment. Then the alcohol evaporates and takes moisture with it. Your lips feel dry again, so you reach for the tube again. Each application buys short relief and sets up the next one. You use more, finish tubes faster, and buy sooner.
We are not alleging a conspiracy. There is a plainer reason alcohol survives in these formulas: it makes manufacturing easier. When a plant runs tens of thousands of units a day, consistency is the hardest problem, and alcohol-based formulas are simple to replicate at that scale. Simple for the factory. Costly for your lips, and wasteful besides: every extra tube the loop sells is another tube in a landfill.
What a balm looks like without it
Ours took forty versions and more than three hundred hours to formulate, largely because we refused the easy base. What is in it instead:
- Beeswax for structure: the frame that holds a natural formula together.
- Shea butter and coconut oil for hydration and a smooth application.
- Honey and vitamin E, strong hydrators used in small amounts.
- Hemp seed oil, which most makers skip because it costs several times what common oils do.
- Kokum butter, firm at room temperature so the balm survives a summer car, melting the moment it meets your lips. It also does not clog pores.
Even the vanilla is deliberate: a harder-to-find essential oil that reads savory instead of the usual candy-sweet. Details like that are why the formula took as long as it did.
What "moisturize" should mean
A balm has one job: put moisture into the lips, let it absorb, and have the feeling last. Not a cooling sting that fades in minutes, and not a wax layer sitting on top of skin that was already dry when you reached for the tube. If you find yourself applying a balm several times a day, the balm is failing at its one job, however pleasant the first minute feels. The result we settled on absorbs quickly and the feeling stays. No loop.
How to read any label
You do not need our balm to step out of the loop. Check the panel. Alcohol denat., SD alcohol, or ethanol high in the list is the drying kind. Fatty alcohols such as cetyl or stearyl alcohol are a different molecule entirely and are not drying, so no witch hunts there.
One more note while you are reading labels: petrolatum seals the surface of the lips rather than adding moisture to them. If your lips were already dry when you reached for the tube, a seal locks in the problem.
