What Your Soap Is Actually Made Of

Three things sit on the shelf calling themselves soap: the synthetic bar, the bottle of body wash, and the cold-process bar. They are made differently, they behave differently on skin, and only one of them is soap in the original sense of the word. Here is the difference, plainly.

The synthetic bar

Most supermarket bars are not soap by chemistry. They are pressed detergent: synthetic surfactants, typically petroleum-derived, with sulfates common among them, plus fragrance and preservatives. They lather hard and clean the same way, by stripping. Plenty of men who believe they have dry skin have a fifty-cent bar manufacturing it for them daily.

Body wash

Body wash is mostly water. Surfactants, preservatives to keep that water shelf-stable, fragrance, and a plastic bottle to carry it. Check the first ingredient on any bottle: it will say aqua, which is water wearing a lab coat. It is the most convenient option, and gentle versions exist. But you are paying bar money for a diluted product, and the pump does not change what the surfactants do once they reach your skin.

The cold-process bar

Cold process is the original method. Oils meet an alkali and saponification turns them into soap, slowly, without the added heat of industrial processing. The maker chooses the oils, and the oils decide everything about the bar.

Ours are coconut, castor and olive oils, with shea butter and aloe vera. Poured slow, then cured for up to six weeks. The cure is not ceremony: water evaporates out of the bar, the bar hardens, and the lather turns denser and milder. Rush it and you get a soft bar that vanishes in two weeks. Cold process also keeps its glycerin, the humectant that industrial soap-making typically strips out and sells on separately. That is the difference you actually feel: the bar cleans, and your skin does not feel tight afterward.

How to tell which one you are holding

The label gives it away. True soap lists oils or their saponified forms: sodium olivate, sodium cocoate, or plainly "saponified oils of." Detergent bars lead with surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium cocoyl isethionate, and they often avoid the word "soap" entirely, calling themselves a "beauty bar" or "cleansing bar." That naming is not modesty. A bar has to actually be soap to be sold as one, so the detergent bars call themselves something else.

Cost, honestly

A cold-process bar costs more at the register than a synthetic one. It is denser, and a properly cured bar stored dry between uses lasts well beyond its size. The real comparison also includes whatever your skin needs after the shower: a stripping cleanser has a way of selling you the moisturizer too.

The verdict
